It’s a Surprise

Don’t tell her I’m coming

I won’t

Let it be a surprise

I will

Does she suspect?

I don’t think so

Not sure…?

I said nothing

I’ll stay back when we land

That’s a plan

Let her think it’s just you

Will do

I’ll take my guitar

Good idea!

She has always enjoyed it

It’s true

Will she meet you at baggage?

I think so

You stand there and wait to receive it

Okay

She’ll suspect something’s up when she sees it

And then?

I’ll sneak up from behind and hug her

Then I’ll catch a picture. And post it!

That was the plan to surprise my sister. But like everything else this week it didn’t play out quite according to plan.

I sent a picture from Dallas, to divert her so she’d think I was traveling alone.

Our plane was early. I got my bag and Todd’s guitar as he stayed out of view. My phone rang.

I’m here!

So am I! Here I come!

Is there anything more beautiful than meeting someone you love at the airport?

Oh no. I forgot my coat.

Go get it!

I went to alert Todd and ran back.

Where’s your coat?

It was gone.

Someone took it?

No biggie. It’s happened before.

Have room for one more? He had snuck up to the car window.

She shrieked.

I cried as they hugged, and forgot to take a picture.

My little sister had received news this week that she would be needing a serious surgery.

When you get a call like that the world changes. For about ten minutes it spins.

We’ve been through this before, she says. We’ll do it again.

Sorry you have to go first, but you know I’ll probably be next, I say. She smiles. Don’t worry! I will be with you.

We know how to do this, she says.

I’ll be back and stay with you each day. You’ll be up walking and home in no time.

She smiles again, this time, with tears in her eyes.

  1. You are so wonderfully creative! I love the way you structured this as dialogue! You immediately drew me into your world. And what a beautiful meeting!

I felt as though I was right there with you; yes, I always cry when meeting loved ones at the airport. So beautiful. Yet, I’m so anxious for your sister… I will pray. It sounds so serious. 😟 Love you, dear Deb!! ❤️

    1. Oh thank you Lynn. What is more life changing than prayer? It’s an interesting time, and we draw nearer and nearer to Him and to each other. So grateful we could all be together this weekend. ❤️ And thank you as always for your precious words. Love you, Deb

      1. Look this:

        Earth
        Composer and singer: Caetano Veloso

When I found myself in jail
In the cell of a prison
It was that I saw for the first time
        Such photographs
        In which ye appear entire
But there, ye were not naked
And yes covered with clouds …

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
Who would ever forget thee? …

        No one supposes the brunette.
        Inside the bluish star
In the vertigo of the cinema
I send a hug to thee
Wee girl how if I were
        The homesick poet
        And ye were Paraíba …

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
Who would ever forget thee? …

        I’m in love
        For a girl, Earth
        Element sign, Earth
From the sea, if say, Earth in sight
        Earth for foot, firmness
        Earth for hand, caress
Other luminaries are her guide …

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
Who would ever forget thee? …

        I am a fire lion
        Without thee would consume me
        To myself forever
        And to nothing would worth
And it would not matter, it would
        Happen, of me being people
        And people is another joy
        Different from the stars …

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
Who would ever forget thee? …

From where neither time nor space
May the force sends the courage
        To people give affection thee
        Throughout for the whole trip
What ye perform in the nothing
        Through which ye carry
The name of your flesh …

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
        Who would ever forget thee?…

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
        Who would ever forget thee?…

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
        Who would ever forget thee?…

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
Who would ever forget thee? …

In the balconies of the lofts
        Of the old, saint Salvador
        There are memories of maidens
From the time of the Emperor
        Everything, everything in Bahia
        makes people want good
        Bahia has a way …

        Earth! Earth!
        For farther
        The wandering navigator
Who would ever forget thee? …

      2. This is one of the biggest and most famous musician and poet of Brazilian popular music.
Just type: Terra – Caetano Veloso, on YT.

ps. he says he was arrested, it was because he was a political prisoner in the 70s, and he was deported to England. It was a regime of dictatorship in Brazil.

  2. Deb,

    My prayers for your sister.

As for ‘how it turned out’…it turned out beautifully.
The picture you carry in your heart is more vivid
than a snapshot. The piece you have written captures
and preserves the beauty of the moment. Rod Stewart was
right when he sang “a picture paints a thousand words”. It
does …but… a word in the hands of a wordsmith such as yourself
paints a picture that conveys feelings and a history … and a future.

Your unique way of sharing the events and the emotions makes this
    article a collage of photos.

    Thank you for sharing!
